Shadows 3 by Charles L. Grant7/8/2023 Our local library stocked several of the Alfred Hitchcock anthologies that were published in the 1960s and 70s, bearing titles such as The Best of Fiends, Ghostly Gallery, Happiness is a Warm Corpse and Tales to Take Your Breath Away. If this was typical of most branches of WH Smith’s – certainly the only book retailer in any of our surrounding towns – then one might have been forgiven for thinking that horror was perhaps not as expansive as it once was earlier in the decade. Over the years I collected them all, and read them diligently. Occasionally there would be titles by John Saul. I was always drawn to the HORROR section (for such a thing existed back then, believe it or not) and the books that comprised it were largely written by Stephen King or James Herbert or Guy N Smith or Shaun Hutson or Graham Masterton. Our nearest WH Smith’s was in Worksop, a half-hour bus-journey away which we took every week. Growing up, as I did, in a mining village in northern England, bookshops were a little hard to come by.

The intrepid canadian expedition7/8/2023 I like the author’s writing style because he added lots of details. In the story, Stanley's brother Arthur sprained his ankle and the illustration shows his ankle is like a bubble. I like this book because the illustrations are very easy to know what they mean. The next morning Nick and Stanley woke up to their parents. Nick tried to help him and he did but he fell off the rail and just in time Stanley curled him up and saved him. Next Nick and Stanley went to Niagara Falls. Then when they got up the mountain Stanley laid on the snow and Nick stepped on. Then when they get there they both see it is a challenging course. While Arthur is recovering from his sprained ankle Nick and Stanley go to a snowboarding championship. Arthur sprained his ankle while going over a bump. In the book Flat Stanley and the Intrepid Canadian Edition Stanley, Nick his friend, and his brother Arthur were all skiing and snowboarding. Jillian’s first assignment for the League could be her last. Dragons light the fires under crayfish pots. Spirit bottles light the front porches after twilight. Mermaids and gator shifters swim in the bayou. They need a plan, so they look to Mystic Bayou, a tiny town hidden in the swamp where humans and supernatural residents have been living in harmony for generations. While the League hopes to hold on to secrecy for a little bit longer, they’re preparing for the worst in terms of human reactions. Anthropologist Jillian Ramsay’s career has taken a turn south.Ĭoncerned that technology is about to chase mythological creatures out into the open (how long can Sasquatch stay hidden from Google maps?), the League for Interspecies Cooperation is sending Jillian to Louisiana on a fact-finding mission. Road-Tripped by Nicole Archer7/7/2023 The sweetīit-O-Honey: Bit-O-Honey works as a road trip snack because you can eat an entire bag of them and not feel awful (trust me, I just did this on a six-hour drive from Northern to Southern California). Here’s what fuels them through long car rides these days, as well as in better times. Eater staffers’ preferred snacks run the gamut. Some road trippers select snacks based on their resemblance to an actual balanced meal, or on whether or not they’ll ensure the driver stays alert at the wheel. Road trip snacks may be the foods you find at gas stations and convenience stores, or indulgent treats that make the trip more bearable. But beyond that, there are several interpretations of the genre. There are certain essential qualities to a road trip snack: You should be able to eat it with one hand and with minimal mess. And given the unpredictability of food options along routes these days, road trip snacks - always an essential item on the road trip packing list - were more important than ever. This summer, the road trip was the only option for many of us to get in some kind of vacation or pay a long-overdue visit to faraway loved ones. part of writing the book was trying to say, some people might not think that what I'm describing constitutes abuse. And I think it can be really harmful, because it doesn't permit space for a multitude of experiences, some of which can be bad - not because the relationship is a lesbian relationship, but because somebody in the relationship is not well. But I think you have a lot of people sort of translate this into, "women aren't capable of hurting each other," or "women aren't capable of abusing each other." Lesbian relationships are the fantasy, the ideal - I would say that I think lesbians and queer women perpetrate that that idea. But my sort of day-to-day life, I don't really have to deal with it, because I'm married to a woman, and that's just not part of my experience right now, which is actually really lovely. I always talk about how in my relationship, like, obviously the patriarchy affects me in all kinds of ways. There's this idea that not having men present in a relationship takes a certain kind of stress off, which sexually is actually true. As a cartoonist noah van sciver7/6/2023 Few cartoonists can captivate you with scenes of opening a goddamn package for a couple of pages, but Booth is certainly one of them and, as with much of her work, a rumination upon/examination of her own creative process is at the heart of things here. Prior to that, though, we are treated to an equal parts thoughtful and dizzying display of motion and its absence, communicated via the entirely relatable means of workaday drudgery, homebound lethargy, and good old fetishistic kink. The title’s a bit curious given that most of the “action” takes place in the city, but rest assured that by the end (for now) of the largely-wordless narrative our heroine/authorial stand-in makes it to the rural retreat in question. Continuing our frenzied and likely haphazard overview/brief analysis of stuff I read over the course of my break from posting here, we happen upon the following foursome of comics -Ĭabin In The Woods, Part One By Tara Booth – Admittedly, the cover price on this 2019 comic from Berlin’s Colorama is steep at 18 Euros plus shipping, but there’s no denying that it’s absolutely gorgeous, as well - which comes as no surprise given that all of Booth’s gouache-painted comics are. Bridge of Clay by Markus Zusak7/6/2023 so i also think this is the story he needed for himself. i can feel every ounce of tears, hope, frustration, dedication, doubt, and love zusak has felt this past decade, in every single page. its quite a departure from his last novel, but i think thats exactly what we needed. its still the same poignant and brilliant writing, but this story is messy and complicated and raw. so i think those who only know MZ via ‘the book thief’ will be in for a small shock. its very reminiscent of his first work, the wolfe brothers series. So im pretty sure that even an infinite combination of words will spectacularly fail in describing what this story means to me, because it has been nearly 12 hours since i finished reading this and i still am at a loss at how to convey the heartbreaking beauty of this book.īut i do think its worth mentioning that zusak goes back to his roots with this story. it is something that demands to be felt, imprinting itself right across my heart. The manner in which this story has impacted me - by inhaling in the broken letters scattered among the pages, causing them to slowly seep into my veins, prompting my heart to start quietly beating for a boy who built a bridge - is not something that can be written in a review. When i die and they open me up, they will see this story engraved on my heart. This book is still so tragically underrated.
